Brian Thomas on abiquiú
On a rocky mesa top, above the Chama River and Abiquiú Lake in northern New Mexico, sits my studio outside the village of Abiquiú. Abiquiú has a history – Native Americans inhabited the river valley for thousands of years before the Spanish established a small town here in the early 1700s. It was significant in the trade industry and was the beginning of the Old Spanish Trail, linking Santa Fe and Los Angeles. In 1949, artist Georgia O’Keeffe was drawn to Abiquiú’s mesas and mountains – sculpted by wind, water and time. Like O'Keeffe, I am inspired by the landscape and Native American art and culture and demonstrate that visually through art. All of my art utilizes stone and rock to tell their story, while reflecting the beauty of Abiquiú’s natural red rock cliffs, Pedernal mountain, lake shore and vistas.
